Enrolling in El Camino
EL CAMINO HIGH SCHOOL
El Camino High School provides alternative education for the students of the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District. El Camino High School has been awarded the status of a Model Continuation High School as of May 2005.
The school is located twenty miles southeast of metropolitan Los Angeles in the city of La Mirada. Few students live in the immediate neighborhood and transportation is available from the cities of Norwalk and La Mirada. A few students also utilize the public transit system. El Camino serves John Glenn High School, Norwalk High Schools, La Mirada High School, and Southeast Academy High School.
WHO ATTENDS EL CAMINO
To enroll at El Camino High School, a student must be at least 16 years old, have attended a comprehensive high school for two years, and be off-track for graduating in four years. Transfer to El Camino is voluntary. Students and families should meet with their home school counselor for a consultation on El Camino Orientations to make the transition a smooth process.
Students who recently moved into the district and are transferring from a continuation high school, will need to register with their new NLMUSD home school (John Glenn HS, La Mirada HS or Norwalk HS) and request a transcript evaluation for possible immediate transfer to El Camino High School pending space availability.
APPLICATION TO RETURN TO COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOL
Students may apply for return to a comprehensive high school at the end of each semester. The criteria for transfer are:
1. Sufficient credits earned at ECHS to permit proper programming in the comprehensive high school.
2. A record of good attendance and citizenship at ECHS.
Three weeks prior to the end of the semester, students may see their counselor at ECHS and apply for review for consideration to return to the comprehensive high school. The review would be based on all criteria that demonstrate a successful return. The student's counselor, will schedule an appointment with the appropriate comprehensive high school that the student and parent/guardian will need to attend. The student may be accepted or denied depending on whether or not student has met all criteria.
